Congratulations to all Indian citizens that from 1st of April 2010, all children of the country have the right to free and compulsory education in neighborhood schools.
Now it's the responsibility of the government to ensure every child is enrolled without any cost to parents. This right empowers us to challenge poor infrastructure, teacher absence, and lack of quality. However, education hasn’t always been a top priority for the country.
Year 1950 – Constitution stated the goal to provide free education within 10 years.
Year 2002 – 86th amendment made education a fundamental right.
Year 2005 – Draft bill presented and reviewed by experts/committees.
Year 2006 – Sent to parliament again but lacked consensus.
Year 2009 – Finally passed by both houses, though still incomplete in many ways.
Despite these challenges, the key question is how the common citizen responds to this Act’s implementation. Are we ready to participate in the process of nation-building? Should the responsibility lie solely with the state?
This Act benefits every child, and by extension, every citizen. So why not engage in supporting every child in our communities, ensuring they receive the education they deserve? Education is governed by law, and that law is equal for all.
